Frequently asked questions
Is the picture re-encoded?
No. For MP4, MOV, MKV and WEBM files the video is copied bit for bit and only the sound track is left out, so the picture is untouched and it finishes in seconds. Old AVI, FLV and WMV files are converted to H.264 because their video cannot be copied into a modern container.
Is this different from turning the volume down?
Yes — the sound track is removed from the file. Nobody can turn it back up, and the file gets smaller. Muting in a player only affects your own playback.
Is my video uploaded?
No. Everything happens on your device.
Can I keep the sound as a separate file?
Yes — run Extract Audio first and you have the sound track on its own, then mute the video. Both are lossless copies, so you lose nothing either way.
The video had no sound to begin with.
You are told so, and the video is copied anyway — which is still useful when a player insists there is a silent track.
Can I mute just part of it?
Not here: this removes the whole track. For silencing one stretch, trim the video into parts, mute the part you want silent, and join them with Merge Video.
Good to know: Every sound track is removed, not just the first. Only the main video track is kept, and you are told when extra tracks were dropped.
