Removing a track, not silencing it
Muting here means the sound track is left out of the new file entirely, not turned down to zero. That distinction matters more than it sounds: a video with a silent sound track still contains every word that was recorded, recoverable by anyone who turns the volume up. A video with no sound track contains nothing to recover. If you are removing audio because of what is on it — a conversation in the background, a name, something said off camera — this is the operation you want, and lowering the volume in an editor is not.
Because only a track is being dropped, the picture is copied across untouched. Nothing is decoded, nothing is re-encoded, not a pixel changes, and a long video processes in seconds rather than minutes. The file gets smaller by roughly whatever the audio weighed — usually a few per cent of a video, and rather more of a screen recording, where the picture compresses extremely well and the speech does not.
Every sound track is removed, not only the first, so a film with several language tracks comes back genuinely silent rather than quietly playing the second one. Only the main video track is kept, and the page tells you when something else was dropped along the way.
The metadata is worth a thought if the reason for muting is privacy. Stripping the sound does not touch the file's other notes about itself — the recording date, the device, and in many phone videos the location where it was filmed. Those live in a different part of the file and survive this operation completely.
When you want something else
ffmpeg does the same thing in one line and is the right tool for a folder: ffmpeg -i in.mp4 -c copy -an out.mp4. The -an drops the audio, -c copy guarantees the picture is not re-encoded. To remove only one track of several, -map 0 -map -0:a:1 keeps everything except the second sound track, which is a precision this page does not offer.
When the goal is to silence a passage rather than the whole video — a phone ringing, a name, a stray comment — muting everything is too blunt. Any free editor will silence a range and leave the rest intact, and ffmpeg -af "volume=enable='between(t,12,18)':volume=0" does it from the command line for a known time range.
Frequently asked questions
Is the picture re-encoded?
No. For MP4, MOV, MKV and WEBM files the video is copied bit for bit and only the sound track is left out, so the picture is untouched and it finishes in seconds. Old AVI, FLV and WMV files are converted to H.264 because their video cannot be copied into a modern container.
Is this different from turning the volume down?
Yes — the sound track is removed from the file. Nobody can turn it back up, and the file gets smaller. Muting in a player only affects your own playback.
Is my video stored anywhere?
No. Nothing is stored, ever.
Can I keep the sound as a separate file?
Yes — run Extract Audio first and you have the sound track on its own, then mute the video. Both are lossless copies, so you lose nothing either way.
The video had no sound to begin with.
You are told so, and the video is copied anyway — which is still useful when a player insists there is a silent track.
Can I mute just part of it?
Not here: this removes the whole track. For silencing one stretch, trim the video into parts, mute the part you want silent, and join them with Merge Video.
Good to know: Every sound track is removed, not just the first. Only the main video track is kept, and you are told when extra tracks were dropped.
