Terms of use

The short version. The tools are free and offered as they are. Your files remain yours and nothing is stored. Keep your originals, because several tools change a document in ways that cannot be reversed. Do not use the site to break the law or to break the site.

Who these terms are with

Toolifine is operated by the person running this site. In this document "we" and "us" mean the operator of this site, and "you" means anyone using the site. Using any tool here means you accept what follows. If you do not accept it, the remedy is simply not to use the site.

Your files are yours

We claim no ownership of, and no licence over, anything you open with a tool on this site. Uploading nothing to us is the design, and where a file does reach a server it is used only to perform the conversion you asked for and is deleted immediately afterwards. What we never do, under any circumstance, is keep a copy, read your documents, index them, or use them to train anything. The privacy policy sets out exactly which tools work which way.

The corollary is that you are responsible for what you put through them. You need the right to use the file, and you must not use these tools to strip protection from a document you have no permission to open, or to process material that is illegal to possess.

Keep your original

This is the most practical clause on the page. Several tools change a document permanently and by design — redaction deletes text from the file itself, flatten turns form fields into fixed page content, compression discards image data, and a password removal produces a copy that is no longer encrypted. The result is a new file; your original is untouched, but only because you still have it. Keep it until you have checked the output.

No warranty

The tools are provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or non-infringement. We do not promise that a given file will convert, that the output will be correct or complete, that the site will be available, or that it will be free of errors.

This matters more than boilerplate usually does, because file formats are messy. A PDF produced by unusual software, a spreadsheet using a feature we do not support, a video with an exotic codec — any of these can fail, or worse, appear to succeed while losing something. Check the output before you rely on it. Where a tool has known limits we state them on its own page rather than burying them here.

Limits of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, nor for any loss of data, files, profits, revenue or goodwill, arising from your use of or inability to use this site — whether or not we were told such damage was possible.

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability that cannot lawfully be excluded, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud. Where a jurisdiction does not allow some of the exclusions above, they apply only to the extent permitted there.

Acceptable use

Do not:

• use the site to process material you have no right to, or to remove protection from someone else's document;
• attempt to disrupt, overload or gain unauthorised access to the site or the servers behind it;
• scrape, automate or resell access to the tools in a way that degrades them for everyone else — occasional scripted use is fine, hammering is not;
• misrepresent this site as your own, or remove attribution from anything we publish under a licence that requires it.

We may restrict or block access where one of these is happening. There is no account to suspend, so in practice that means rate limiting or an IP block.

Third-party components and other people's rights

The site is built on open-source software, and some of those licences place obligations on us that we discharge on the licences page — including where to obtain source for the components that require it. The tool names, the site design and the written content here are ours; the formats the tools work with are open standards and belong to nobody.

Advertising and analytics

Where the site carries advertising or measurement, what is collected and by whom is described in the privacy policy, and you can change your answer at any time from the link in the footer. Advertisers are third parties: we do not control what they show, and an ad appearing beside a tool is not an endorsement of it.

Changes

These terms may change as the site does. The date at the top is when they last did. A change that materially affects what happens to your files would be reflected in the privacy policy at the same time, and that page is the one to check. Continuing to use the site after a change means accepting the revised terms.
