Frequently asked questions
How can rotating be instant and lossless?
MP4 and MOV files carry a rotation flag that every current player, phone, TV and editor honours. Setting that flag rewrites a few bytes, so nothing is decoded, nothing is re-encoded and nothing is lost.
My old program ignores the rotation.
A few older editors and players do. Switch on "Bake the turn into the picture" and the video is re-encoded actually rotated, which no program can ignore.
Is my video uploaded?
No — nothing leaves your device, for either kind of rotation.
Why is my phone video sideways in the first place?
The camera sensor records the same way round regardless of how you hold the phone, and writes down how you were holding it. Anything that reads that note shows it correctly; anything that ignores it shows it sideways.
Can I mirror without rotating?
Yes. A mirror has to be re-encoded — there is no flag for it — so it is done at high quality.
What about AVI, WMV and MPEG files?
Those formats have no rotation flag, so the turn is baked into the picture and the file comes back as an MP4.
Good to know: Rotation is in quarter turns; arbitrary angles are an editor's job. A baked rotation re-encodes, which costs a little quality and some time.
