Frequently asked questions
Will joining my MP3s lose quality?
Not if they match. Files with the same codec, sample rate and channel count are joined by copying their encoded frames — the result is bit for bit the same sound. Files that differ have to be decoded and re-encoded to a single consistent format, and the result names which ones had to change.
What counts as "matching"?
Same codec, same sample rate, same number of channels. Two MP3s exported from the same recorder or the same software almost always match. A phone recording and a downloaded track usually do not.
What order will they be in?
Exactly the order shown on the page, which you set by dragging. Files are never sorted by name behind your back — a folder full of "part 10, part 1, part 2" would come out in the wrong order if they were.
Can I join files of different formats?
Yes. An MP3, a WAV and an M4A can be joined; they are decoded and written as one file. The result is an MP3 unless every input was lossless, in which case it stays a WAV so nothing is thrown away.
Is there a gap between the pieces?
No — they run straight on, one into the next. If you want a pause between them, add a moment of silence to the end of a file before joining, or trim the pieces so the natural pause is already there.
Is anything uploaded?
No. Every file is read and the joined file written by your own browser, so several large recordings are combined without a single upload.
Good to know: Files that differ in format, rate or channels must be re-encoded to match the first, which costs a little quality for those files. There are no crossfades between pieces yet.
