Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded?

No. The archive is built on your own device and saved straight to your downloads. Your files are never uploaded, which is the point: the things people most often need to zip — documents, photographs, a folder of work — are exactly the things that should not be handed to a stranger's server first.

Why is my ZIP barely smaller than the files?

Because most of what people zip is already compressed. JPEGs, PNGs, MP3s, MP4s, PDFs and Office documents all have compression built in, and squeezing them again gains nothing — it can even add a few bytes. This page recognises those formats and stores them as they are rather than wasting your time pretending, which is why a zip of photographs finishes immediately. Text, documents and code compress properly.

Can I password-protect it?

Not yet. It is better to say so than to offer the old ZIP password scheme, which is genuinely weak and breakable in seconds — it would give you a feeling of safety you do not actually have.

Does it keep my folders?

Yes. Drop a folder in and its structure is kept inside the archive, so it unpacks the way it went in.

What if two files have the same name?

The second one is given a number, the way your downloads folder does. Silently letting one file overwrite another would lose your data without telling you.

Is there a size limit?

Your device's memory rather than a server's upload cap. Hundreds of files and several gigabytes are fine on a normal computer; a phone will manage less.
