Bijoy to Unicode converters, tested side by side
Most converters get "Bangladesh" right. The differences show up in reph, rare conjuncts and text copied out of Word — exactly the words an official document is full of.

Why converting Bijoy is harder than it looks
Text typed with Bijoy and the SutonnyMJ font is not really Bangla as far as a computer is concerned. It is English letters and symbols that a special font happens to draw as Bangla. "evsjv‡`k" in SutonnyMJ shows as বাংলাদেশ; in any other font, or on any phone, it shows as evsjv‡`k. Converting to Unicode means reading those symbols back into real Bangla letters.
Four things make that difficult. Vowel signs are stored in the order they are drawn, so the ে in বাংলাদেশ comes before the দ, and the converter has to move it. The reph (র-ফলা on top) is typed after the letter it sits on, sometimes after a whole conjunct, and has to be moved back to the front. Many conjuncts are a single glyph, such as ² for ক্ষ্ম or Ð for ণ্ড, and a converter whose table misses one leaves the symbol in your text. And Microsoft Word changes what you typed: AutoCorrect turns the ` key, which is দ in Bijoy, into a curly quote, so a document that looks fine in Word contains characters a typist never pressed.
How we tested
We took 34 words and phrases and ran each one through five converters on 2 November 2026: Toolifine, ConverterAZ (bijoy.converteraz.com), Team Z Lab (tool.teamzlab.com), Rising BD (risingbd.com) and Bangla Date Today (bangladatetoday.com). Each word was pasted on its own, converted, and compared letter for letter with the correct Unicode.
The words fall into seven groups: ordinary words (বাংলাদেশ, a date), vowel signs (ঐতিহ্য, হৃদয়), conjuncts (শিক্ষা মন্ত্রণালয়, লক্ষ্মীপুর, খণ্ড, তীক্ষ্ণ), reph (পর্যন্ত, আন্তর্জাতিক, কর্মকর্তা), ya-phala (ট্র্যাক, ন্যায্য), text copied from Word or a PDF (যদি, দুই, দোকান, স্থান), and the double danda ॥.
Be clear about one thing before reading the scores. Several of these words are here because they once broke our own converter on a real document — a rental agreement, a government circular — and we fixed it. So our perfect score is partly a record of failures we have already met, not proof that ours is flawless. Treat the table as a list of the traps, and check your own text with two converters if it matters.
The results
Bijoy to Unicode, out of 34: Toolifine 34, Team Z Lab 30, ConverterAZ 29, Rising BD 25, Bangla Date Today 5.
Unicode to Bijoy, out of 34: Toolifine 34, Team Z Lab 33, ConverterAZ 33, Rising BD 29, Bangla Date Today 12. We judged this direction by whether the Bijoy text reads back as the right words, because SutonnyMJ has two equally correct glyphs for some signs (‡ and † are both ে) and an exact-match test would punish a converter for a harmless choice.
Every converter got the ordinary words right except one. Team Z Lab, ConverterAZ and Rising BD all handled plain text, vowel signs and reph correctly. If your text is short, typed by hand and never went through Word, any of those three will do.
Bangla Date Today failed even the basics. It turned বাংলাদেশ into বাংলাদৈশ and সোনার into সৈানার, because it reads the most common ে glyph as ৈ. We would not use it for anything.
The words that separate them
Text copied from Word. This is where most real documents go wrong, and where every other converter failed. Word turns দ into a curly quote, so "hw’" should become যদি but came out as য’ি or যি’ — a stray quote mark with the vowel sign stranded. দুই failed the same way, and so did দোকান, where a PDF copy had written দ as a straight apostrophe. A long document typed in Word can contain hundreds of these, and they are easy to miss because the quote mark is small.
Single-glyph conjuncts. খণ্ড (LÐ) came out as খÐ from three of the five — the ণ্ড symbol simply left in the text. ConverterAZ got it right. Rising BD also left symbols in লক্ষ্মীপুর (ল²ীপুর) and তীক্ষ্ণ (তীক্ষè), and broke উচ্ছ্বাস.
The double danda. ॥ is typed as a backslash in Bijoy. ConverterAZ and Rising BD left the backslash in; ConverterAZ also leaves ॥ as a Unicode character when going the other way, which SutonnyMJ cannot draw.
Going to Bijoy, Rising BD leaves Unicode in. য় and ড় came out as the letter followed by a separate dot (the nukta), which shows as a box or a stray mark in SutonnyMJ. That affected বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়, শিক্ষা মন্ত্রণালয় and ব্রাহ্মণবাড়িয়া — exactly the words a letterhead needs.
Where the others are better
ConverterAZ accepts files: Word, Excel, CSV, text and even PDF, up to 10–20 MB, and says it installs as an app that works offline. If you need to convert a PDF, it is the only one here that tries; we did not test how well its file output keeps formatting. Toolifine converts Word, Excel and text files but not PDF.
Team Z Lab is clean and fast and was the closest to perfect on hand-typed text. Its only failures were the quote marks Word and PDFs put in place of দ, and খণ্ড.
Desktop converters were not tested. Avro Keyboard has a converter built in, and many offices rely on Windows tools like it. If you already use one and your output looks right, you have no reason to switch.
What no converter can fix
If the Bijoy text itself is damaged, every converter will produce damaged Bangla. That happens with text copied out of a scanned PDF, where the recognition misread one symbol as another (v and w, j and i), or with a PDF that dropped letters when its text was extracted. "Awwg" should be আমি but has an extra w, so it becomes অমিি whatever you use.
Our Bijoy to Unicode converter lists such words under the result so you can fix them by hand rather than finding them in print. For a scanned page, it is usually faster to skip Bijoy entirely and read the page with Bangla OCR, which produces Unicode directly.
How to check your own text in a minute
Paste a paragraph into two converters and compare the results. Then search the output for three things: a curly quote mark next to a Bangla letter (Word's দ), any Latin symbol such as Ð, ², è or © left between Bangla letters (a conjunct or reph the converter did not know), and a vowel sign sitting at the start of a word (a ি or ে that was not moved). Any of those means the converter missed something, and the same mistake will be repeated everywhere in the document.
Going the other way, for a newspaper, a printing press or an office that still uses SutonnyMJ, the check runs in reverse: convert with Unicode to Bijoy, paste the result into Word in SutonnyMJ and look for boxes, which are Unicode characters the converter left behind.
Frequently asked questions
Which Bijoy to Unicode converter is the most accurate?
In our test of 34 hard words on 2 November 2026, Toolifine converted all 34, Team Z Lab 30, ConverterAZ 29, Rising BD 25 and Bangla Date Today 5. For ordinary hand-typed text the top four are all fine; the differences are in Word-copied text, rare conjuncts and the double danda.
Why does my converted text have quote marks in the middle of words?
Because the Bijoy text was typed in Microsoft Word, whose AutoCorrect turns the ` key — দ in Bijoy — into a curly quote. A converter that does not expect this leaves the quote in and strands the vowel sign, so যদি becomes য’ি. Use a converter that reads the curly quote as দ.
Can a converter fix Bijoy text copied from a scanned PDF?
No. If the scan misread a symbol, the Bijoy text is already wrong and every converter will turn it into the wrong Bangla. Read the scanned page with Bangla OCR instead, which gives Unicode directly.
Can I convert a whole Word or Excel file?
Yes. Toolifine and ConverterAZ both accept Word and Excel files; ConverterAZ also accepts PDF. Converting the file rather than pasting text keeps the layout, tables and other fonts as they were.
Is Unicode or Bijoy better for official documents?
Unicode, for anything that will be emailed, searched, posted online or opened on a phone — it displays everywhere without a special font. Bijoy is still needed where a printing press, a form or an office system expects SutonnyMJ.
